Hurricanes power away from Rebels

Wing Ben Lam continued his fantastic form in Melbourne on Friday night, scoring four tries to help the Hurricanes to an empahatic 50-19 win over the Rebels at AAMI Stadium.

Lam set a new club record for an individual in Investec Super Rugby and took his tally of tries for the season to eight as the Hurricanes moved to within a point of the Rebels at the top of the table having played one less match.

The win also saw the Hurricanes move to the top of the New Zealand conference following the bonus point victory.

Hurricanes head coach Chris Boyd said they went into the match expecting the Rebels to start strongly and that's exactly what happend as they took a 19-8 lead near the end of the first half.

However, Boyd said they had seen how the Rebels had leaked points late in halves and that was repeated on Friday as the Hurricanes ran in 17 quick points to take a 25-19 advantage into the break.

That pattern continued in the second half as the Rebels struggled to contain the Hurricanes attack or find a way through an improved defensive line.

There were numerous quality tries from the Hurricanes with Lam showing his tremendous finishing abilities while Gareth Evans and Ngani Laumape also crossed for memorable efforts.

Lam played down his quality performance after the match, instead highighting the good work done by team-mates in the midfield and the work of the forwards to consistently get over the advantage line as calls continue for him to be afforded an opportunity in the All Blacks.

"I try not to pay too much attention to all of that noise. I guess for me it's about performing for the Hurricanes. I mean you've still got Nehe [Milner-Skudder] to come back, we've got Jules [Savea] in our back-three so there's a lot of competition out there," he said.

"For me it's about trying to play good every time I do play and put on a performance for the team."

While a little concerned about how they started some aspects of the match, Boyd was more than satisifed with the overall effort.

"Each of the victories we've had over the last three weeks [against the Crusaders, Highlanders and Rebels] have had little components that I've been really pleased with," he said. "In this one, for us to keep our composure and stick to what we'd talked about before the game and make sure that we just concentrated on what we needed to do to turn that momentum around, I thought the boys did really well."

The Hurricanes return now to New Zealand where they will prepare to face the Sharks in Napier on Friday night.
