Du'Plessis Kirifi extends his contract with the Hurricanes through 2025

The Hurricanes have announced today that Du’Plessis Kirifi will recommit to the Hurricanes until the end of 2025. The 25-year-old flanker has made 52 appearances for the Hurricanes since his debut against the Waratahs in 2019.

Speaking on his contract extension with the Hurricanes, Kirifi said, “I feel extremely blessed to be able to play for the Hurricanes for the next three seasons. I still remember when I first signed with the Canes, which feels like ages ago now, but I still feel the same excitement about this team now as I did then, so yeah, it's exciting. I feel really grateful.”

Born in Taranaki, the former Francis Douglas Memorial College student began his rugby career in Hamilton on an academy contract. Shifting to Wellington in 2017, he made his Wellington Lions debut and impressed in his debut season helping the Lions claim the 2017 Championship.

Higher honours beckoned, as the then 21-year-old signed with the Hurricanes and was made Wellington Lions Captain ahead of the 2019 season.

Head coach, Jason Holland, says Kirifi has grown a lot in his four years with the team.

“It's been great to watch Dups grow over his time at the Canes. Both on and off the field he has had a big influence on this team. He is one of the best 7s in the country at slowing up and turning over the opposition’s ball and has learnt how to adapt to referees' interpretations.

“We love his commitment to the swirl and are excited at where he can get to in the next few years,” said Holland.

As for the man himself, he has a level-headed but ambitious approach to the future.

“I’m keen to nail my role here in the Hurricanes and help this club win championships. That is why I play, that is why we all play.

“I am really looking forward to the Super Rugby season. It’s always challenging physically but that’s the best part about it, so I can’t wait to get out there,” said Kirifi.
