Bio

Dion Waller gave terrific service to the Hurricanes and New Zealand rugby over an eight-year career between 1995-2002, spanning 180 first class games. Waller played for the Hurricanes continuously between 1996-2002, New Zealand Maori between 1996-2001, and made the All Blacks at the end of 2001.

Waller made his first class debut when he came on as a replacement for the New Zealand Colts against Argentina U21 in 1995 and first turned out for King Country that year, where he played 21 games in 1995-1996. In 1997-1998 he payed 25 matches for the Central Vikings, before continuing his trek south to play for the Vodafone Wellington Lions 43 times between 1999-2003. During this time he was capped 65 times for the Hurricanes and 14 times for New Zealand Maori. With the Maori he toured Scotland in 1998 and Fiji in 1999. He was also a New Zealand A European tourist in 2000 and was placed on standby for the All Blacks in case of injury.

Something of a specialist at pinching opposition lineout ball, he was called into the All Blacks for their 2001 tour of the UK and Argentina, playing in two matches against Ireland A and Scotland A and then earning his sole test cap against Argentina.

In 2002 Waller moved to Japan, spending four years with the Toyota club in Nagoya. He returned to New Zealand in 2006, but then packed his bags for a two-season stint for Italian team Viadana. Returning home for good in 2008 with his young family, Waller has since become a Real Estate agent in Paremata just north of Wellington and in mid-2009 was helping out coaching at the local Paremata-Plimmerton and Tawa clubs and helped coach Tawa Premiers in Wellington’s Swindale Shield and Jubilee Cup in 2012.

Waller was Tawa’s coaching coordinator when they won the Swindale Shield - Jubilee Cup double in 2013.
