A product of Napier Boys' High School, Kirkpatrick's game time was limited during his second stint at the Hurricanes because of the presence of Beauden Barrett.
Kirkpatrick played provincial rugby for Wellington and Hawke's Bay while he was a member of the 2018 Blues Super Rugby squad.
