Joe Filemu was picked out of the original pool of NRFU contracted players as an injury replacement in the first year of the Super 12. A halfback, Filemu made one appearance against the Natal Sharks. Later that year he was part of the Wellington NPC squad as scrumhalf Filemu also toured New Zealand with the 1996 Western Samoan test team, playing at first five-eighth against the All Blacks in the test match in Napier. He played at halfback in four of the six tour matches, scoring tries in each of Samoa's games against Counties Manukau, Taranaki and New Zealand Maori. He played 22 Tests for Samoa between 1995-2001. Joe's Brother Lotu was also a Wellington representative in 1997.
