Triple home derby part of Hurricanes 2020 season

The Hurricanes will play three New Zealand derby matches in a four week period in Wellington after the 2020 Investec Super Rugby draw was released today.

The Hurricanes will host the Highlanders, Chiefs and Crusaders between April 17 and May 8, with the side having their second bye of the season in between.

"It's going to be a challenging month for us but a really exciting one for our fans to enjoy the excitement of derby games at home," Hurricanes head coach John Plumtree said.

The Hurricanes kick off their 2020 season with an away match against the Stormers in Cape Town on Sunday, February 2 (NZ time) before they conclude their two-match tour with a fixture against the Jaguares in Buenos Aries.

They then return for their first home match in Wellington on Saturday, February 15, when they will host the Sharks at the new kick-off time of 7.05pm.

"The last two times we have met the Sharks they have been really physical and exciting encounters and we have built up a real rivalry with them," Plumtree added. "We think it is a great way to start our home campaign."

The first bye for the Hurricanes will come in round four before they host the Sunwolves at a venue that will be announced soon.

Other highlights of the Hurricanes home campaign include a family friendly kick-off time of 4.45pm against the Waratahs on Saturday, May 30.

Hurricanes chief executive Avan Lee said there were a number of great membership offers available for fans with sales already strong for the 2020 season.

"We have built up a great relationship with our members and the feedback we are getting has been really positive to date.

"As well as the excitement of the derby matches we will be hosting some real quality sides across the whole season which should provide plenty of entertainment and exciting rugby, not only for our members but everyone who enjoys supporting the Hurricanes.

"We also believe the new kick-off times of 4.45pm and 7.05pm will add real appeal to everyone who wants to be part of the action."

The away schedule includes trips to meet the Brumbies and Reds.
