Hurricanes defence leads the way as the Blues beaten

The character of the 2019 Hurricanes squad was again on show on Friday night as they defeated the Blues 22-12 at Eden Park.

It was the fifth Investec Super Rugby win in a row and the ninth overall for the Hurricanes who remain in a home quarterfinal position.

It was also the Hurricanes' eighth win in a row over the Blues and it was built very much on the back of the character the side has shown throughout the season.

This match was defined by how well organised the Hurricanes defence was and their ability to take their chances.

Forced to make more than twice as many tackles as the Blues, the Hurricanes worked from the first minute to the end as they were guided superbly by captain TJ Perenara who got plenty of support from some key senior players while there were also some shining performances from players who have had limited time in the jersey.

While the Hurricanes scrum came under pressure for short periods it more than held its own for the majority of the match while Perenara's skill at disrupting the Blues ball at the back of the set piece also proved crucial.

Add in some aggressive defence at key times and the work by Ben Lam and Beauden Barrett to score vital tries and it was a memorable night for the vistors.

Fullback Jordie Barrett bounced back from a couple of early errors to be really influential while the work rate of the whole side was critical.

The Hurricanes now head home to prepare to face the Jaguares at Our House, Westpac Stadium, on Friday night.

Hurricanes 22 (Ben Lam, Jordie Barrett, Beauden Barrett tries; Beauden Barrett 2 cons, Jordie Barrett pen)

Blues 12 (Sam Nock, Dalton Papalii tries; Harry Plummer con)

Halftime: 14-7
