The Hurricanes Super Rugby Club today announced that Chief Executive Officer Avan Lee has resigned after more than ten years of service to the club, having taken up the role in June 2015.

Lee said that with recent changes at Board level and other developments underway across the organisation, along with his decade at the helm, the time felt right to step aside and allow new leadership to guide the next phase of the Hurricanes’ journey.

Since joining the Hurricanes in 2015, Lee has led the club through a significant period of milestones and challenges, including the team’s first and only Super Rugby title in 2016.

While the post-COVID environment and wider economic conditions has presented considerable challenges across professional rugby, the Hurricanes acknowledge Lee’s steady leadership during this period, which has left the club well-positioned for the future.

Under Lee’s guidance, the Hurricanes have developed a diverse commercial network both in New Zealand and overseas, a robust culture, and high-quality playing and coaching rosters, that provide a strong platform for the next chapter of success.

Outgoing Hurricanes Chairman Iain Potter paid tribute to Lee’s impact: “Avan has been an outstanding leader for the Hurricanes and we’re grateful for his commitment to our organisation for more than ten years. He’s guided the club with integrity, professionalism, and vision through a decade of significant change. His contribution to our organisation, and to professional rugby in New Zealand, cannot be overstated."

Reflecting on his time with the Hurricanes, Avan Lee said: “After ten years, I feel now is the right time to step aside and allow new leadership to continue building on the great work that’s been done. I’m extremely proud of what we’ve achieved together, and I want to thank our players, staff, shareholders, and supporters for their dedication to and belief in the club. The Hurricanes will always hold a special place in my heart, and I look forward to cheering the team on in the seasons ahead.”

“The Hurricanes Board and staff extend their sincere thanks to Avan for his service, leadership, and contribution to the club. We look forward to seeing him at Hurricanes HQ and at games, as a respected member of the Hurricanes family,” said Potter.
