The game against Moana Pasifika on Saturday, 31 May, at 7.05 pm at Sky Stadium is shaping up to be a huge crowd!

The round 16  game against the Moana Pasifika is not only crucial in the Hurricanes' push for a top 4 place, but it’s also a chance for fans to see several familiar faces and even family reunions! 

There are many connections between the teams, including former players, coaches, and even brothers!

Here we go!

  • Moana Pasifika’s Head Coach, Tana Umaga - A Hurricanes legend, played 122 matches for the Hurricanes between 1996 and 2007.
  • Moana's captain, Ardie Savea, played 131 matches for the Hurricanes between 2013 and 2023, with brother Julian playing 153 games across two stints.
  • Alando Soakai - Coached Wellington (and several current Hurricanes) to the 2024 NPC championship. He’s now Moana’s defence coach.
  • Ex-Hurricane Jackson Garden-Bachop attended school and played first XV rugby with Peter Umaga Jensen; he also plays for Wellington in the NPC alongside several current Hurricanes players.
  • Tevita Mafileo (Hurricanes) and Sione Mafile'o (Moana) are brothers on opposing teams.
  • Riley Hohepa was initially a replacement player for Moana in late 2022. He then joined the Hurricanes and made his Super Rugby Pacific debut against Moana in 2023
  • Former Wellington and Hurricanes players, who now play for Moana, include:
    • Jonathan Taumateine played for the Hurricanes 2020 - 2021
    • Losi Filipo plays for Wellington in the NPC and was a Hurricanes squad member in 2024
    • Pepesana Patafilo played for the Hurricanes from 2021 - 2024, and is currently in the Wellington NPC squad
    • Danny Toala also played briefly for the Hurricanes between 2019-2021.
