Savea to lead Hurricanes in Brisbane

Experienced wing Julian Savea will lead an exciting young Hurricanes squad across the Tasman for this weekend's Brisbane Global Tens tournament.

The former All Blacks wing, who has made 103 appearances for the Hurricanes, will provide plenty of guidance to a squad that features a number of New Zealand's next crop of talent.

While the squad also includes a number of Hurricanes who will feature in this year's Investec Super Rugby competition, coach Chris Boyd has opted to reward a number of players from the club's development programme who featured prominently in last year's successful Mitre 10 Cup campaign.

Although the Brisbane Global Tens is still a relatively new concept, having kicked off for the first time last year, a number of the Hurricanes squad have shown how well they adapt to this version of the game.

Top of that list is former New Zealand Sevens star Ben Lam who will provide a real attacking edge to the Hurricanes out wide along with Jonah Lowe who scored a hat-trick of tries in last week's pre-season win over the Crusaders in Greymouth.

First five-eighth Jackson Garden-Bachop was another player to impress in Greymouth and he should enjoy the more open space the tournament provides.

Up front there should also be a fair amount of interest in how some of the young players perform, including dynamic prop Alex Fidow and former Melbourne Rebels lock Murray Douglas.

The Hurricanes will meet the Crusaders and Fiji on Friday night before they round out their pool matches against the Brumbies on Saturday.
