Super Rugby Form Watch: Hurricanes

With the Investec Super Rugby season steadily approaching, check out five Hurricanes players who performed strongly on the International stage in November.

Ben May
Games played: Maori All Blacks v USA, Maori All Blacks v Brazil
The scoop: While not one of the superstar names in the Maori All Blacks, 36-year-old prop Ben May’s experience was to the fore during their tour of USA and South America. Playing in the opening two matches against USA and Brazil, Ben May was in the thick of a rugged forward battle on both occasions and showed his versatility by playing both loosehead and tighthead prop. The 120kg powerhouse was rewarded with a try for his toil against USA and will play a crucial role both on and off the field for the Hurricanes in 2019.
Points scored: 5 (one try)
Rating: 8/10

Jordie Barrett
Games played: All Blacks vs Japan, All Blacks vs Italy
The scoop: Mainly used as a fullback for the All Blacks and Hurricanes, Jordie Barrett has put his hand up as a genuine contender for the All Black number 14 jersey at the Rugby World Cup with a stunning display against Italy. Barrett was one of the All Blacks best in the All Blacks 66-3 victory in Rome with four tries, 16 carries and 138 metres ran in an impressive all-round display. With Ben Lam and Nehe Milner-Skudder also in the squad, the Hurricanes will boast a world-class back three – wherever Jordie Barrett slots in.
Points scored: 22 (four tries, one con)
Rating: 7.5/10

Matt Proctor
Games played: All Blacks vs Japan, Maori All Blacks vs Brazil, Maori All Blacks vs Chile
The Scoop: Matt Proctor was rewarded for his hard work and consistent performances on the domestic and Super Rugby stage over recent seasons with a Test debut for the All Blacks against Japan in November. He formed a dynamic combination with Hurricanes teammate Ngani Laumape in the midfield as the All Blacks ran away with a 69-31 victory. The 26-year-old then joined the Maori All Blacks in South America where he made an immediate impression from the bench to set up Jonah Lowe for a try in the hard fought 35-3 win over Brazil. Proctor started in the 73-0 rout of Chile where his distribution skills and defence helped the Maori All Blacks finish their season on a high.
Points scored: 5 (one try)
Rating: 7.5/10

TJ Perenara
Games played: All Blacks vs Australia (Yokohama), All Blacks vs England, All Blacks vs Ireland, All Blacks vs Italy
The Scoop: TJ Perenara has significantly closed the gap on Aaron Smith as the number one ranked halfback in New Zealand in 2018 and was rewarded with Test starts against Australia and Italy on the season-ending tour. Perenara was among the All Blacks best in their 37-20 win over Australia in Yokohama, even denying Wallabies lock Rob Simmons a certain try with his desperate defence. Perenara was tidy from the bench against England and Ireland despite not getting the clean ball that he thrives on. The 26-year-old finished his season with an accomplished performance against Italy which was capped off by his 12th Test try.
Points: 5 (one try)
Rating: 7/10

Beauden Barrett
Games played: All Blacks vs Australia (Yokohama), All Blacks vs England, All Blacks vs Ireland, All Blacks vs Italy
The Scoop: Beauden Barrett began the season-ending tour with a sublime performance against Australia in Yokohama. The Taranaki-born product scored 17 points in the All Blacks 37-20 win over Australia, including engineering a superb set piece try in the 58th minute to give the All Blacks a handy buffer. In the two nail-biting clashes against England and Ireland, Barrett landed the first drop goals of his Test career to underline his ability to nail key moments in a game. Barrett finished the Vista Northern Tour with 15 points against Italy, including scoring a virtuoso try when he latched onto a long Italian line-out throw and out-gassed the defence to the line.
Points: 52 (two tries, 9 con, 6 pen, 2 dg)
Rating: 8/10
