Shields claims Surf to Peak victory

No one could stop Brad Shields from victory as he fought his way to a comfortable victory at the annual Hurricanes' Surf to Peak challenge on Saturday.

The loose forward finished in a respectable time of 1 hour 2 minutes and 7 seconds after battling a blustery northerly for much of the 21km bike ride.

Shields was followed by Jason Woodward in a time of 1 hour 6 minutes and 15 seconds, while third place went to replacement hooker Brayden Mitchell, who came in at 1 hour 6 minutes and 29 seconds.

The gruelling event started at Lyall Bay with a 1km run, where they then jumped on their bikes for a 21km cycle around the bays.

This took them around Breaker Bay, Seatoun, and Karaka Bay, and continued around the headland, along Evans Bay and past Greta Point to Oriental Parade. From there, they endured a 2km uphill run to the Mt Victoria lookout.

Shields was stoked to be crowned the new champion, despite admitting there were a few late scratchings with injury, but gave all the credit to Mark Abbott and Callum Gibbins, who set the pace for him during the bike ride.
