Hurricanes romp home to victory against Sunwolves in Napier

The Hurricanes have pulled off a ten-try thriller to win 62 -15 against the Sunwolves at Napier’s McLean Park.

It’s the third straight win for the Wellington Super Rugby team, who now look forward to a clash against the Blues at Sky Stadium in a week’s time.

It was a special night to remember for South African winger, Kobus Van Wyk, who scored three tries on debut. His first, just 11-minutes into the game also happened to be the first time he’d touched the ball.

Van Wyk, spoke to media on the phone and says he still can’t quite believe his luck.

“I still have to pinch myself when I think about playing for a New Zealand Super Rugby team. It was just awesome to go out there last night and it certainly makes me feel like the move to New Zealand was well worth it.”

There was plenty more action spread throughout the game, with Chase Tiatia grabbing a try just before the first-half buzzer before TJ Perenara, Ben Lam, Gareth Evans and Vince Aso completed the rout in the second 40-minutes.

Tiatia’s first try at the 19-minute mark, moved the Hurricanes to a 12-10 lead, at which point the team never looked back.

Fifty points were on the board before the 60-minute mark had ticked over.

Tiatia showed his pedigree at fullback, sharing two assists with Aso whilst also slotting a conversion.

Fletcher Smith also came to play, slotting five conversions over the course of the night.

It was in the last three minutes, that Aso showed his brilliance after chasing down his own kick and scoring a try.

Saturday’s match is the Hurricanes first NZ derby of 2020 and is set to be a mouth-watering clash after the Blues’ unbeaten tour of South Africa.

Kick off at 7:05pm.
