John Plumtree – Head Coach

John Plumtree takes over as head coach of the Hurricanes after four years as assistant to Chris Boyd during which he helped the club to its first Super Rugby title in 2016. Born in Taranaki, Plumtree has an extensive coaching background domestically and internationally. He has held head coaching jobs in Wales, New Zealand and South Africa and through his long association with the Natal Sharks while he has also worked as forwards coach with Ireland and as a defence coach with Japan. His coaching career followed a successful playing one which saw him represent Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay and Natal between 1985 and 1997.

Jason Holland - Assistant Coach
Having been with the Hurricanes since 2016, Jason Holland extended his contract as assistant coach until the end of 2021. Having started his first class playing career with Manawatu, Holland moved to Irish club Munster in 1999 where he went on to play more than 100 matches while appearing in two Heineken Cup finals.

He returned to New Zealand in 2012 and became an assistant coach at Canterbury before accepting his role at the Hurricanes where he helped the club win its first Super Rugby title.

Carlos Spencer - Assistant Coach
The former All Blacks playmaker will join the Hurricanes as an assistant coach in 2019 after he ends his latest stint in Japan with the Sanix Blues in December. Having represented the Blues between 1996 and 2005, Spencer moved to the United Kingdom where he went on to make more than 100 appearances for the Northampton Saints.

Spencer’s coaching career started after a playing stint in South Africa with the Golden Lions before he linked up with the Natal Sharks before being named head coach of the Eastern Province Kings.
