Joshua Moorby

Outside Back, Fullback

Bio

2024 will be Hurricane #290 Josh Moorby’s fourth overall season in Super Rugby Pacific and third with the Hurricanes.

He first burst onto the first-class scene in 2019 when he made his debut for the Southland Stags in the National Provincial Championship (NPC). In 2021, the fullback was brought into the Highlanders Super Rugby squad as an injury replacement.

In 2022, Moorby then made the move to the Hurricanes where he had a breakout season, which saw him not only named as Rookie of the Year at the club, but also had his contract extended to 2024. But the accolades didn’t stop there, as he was named in the Māori All Blacks squad for the test series against Ireland, where he played one match, representing his iwi Ngāti Maniapoto.

The 25-year-old has come a long way from playing backyard rugby on his family’s dairy farm in Te Awamutu – where he would often get “cleaned up” by his older brother – to one of the shining stars of Super Rugby Pacific.

Moorby, who now represents the Taniwha (Northland) in NPC rugby, has played 25 games for the Hurricanes, and hopes to have the opportunity to make 50 appearances for the club.

If Moorby continues with his scintillating form over the past two seasons, higher honours could be on the way for the fast-running fullback.

Outside of rugby, Moorby likes to golf and fish, but says he is no way near as good as fellow teammate Jordie Barrett.
