Joe McDonell first came on to the New Zealand first class scene in Otago where his performances saw him elevated to the Highlanders.
However, there was no shortage of quality props down south, including the likes of Carl Hoeft, Kees Meeuws and Carl Hoeft.
Despite that McDonnell saw enough game time to be selected in the All Blacks in 2002 and made eight test appearances. He moved to the Hurricanes in 2004 and made 11 appearances.
