Charlie Ngatai headed to Wellington from Poverty Bay where he was schooled at Gisborne Boys' High School.
A former secondary school athletics champion, Ngatai was selected in the Hurricanes after impressing with Wellington.
He surprisingly shifted to the Chiefs after two years with the Hurricanes although a place in the midfield was blocked by the likes of Ma'a Nonu and Conrad Smith.
He excelled at the Chiefs and made his test debut for the All Blacks against Samoa. His career was interupted by issues as a result of concussion.
Ngatai moved to French club Lyon at the end of the 2018 Super Rugby season.
