Four of the Hurricanes had the pleasure of going out to Cannon's Creek School to help with their rugby team before they played for the Robbie Fruean Shield. There was a great article in the Kapi-Mana News about the visit. See their story here:

Four Hurricanes players put their rugby coaching skills to the test at Cannons Creek School last week.

Part-time teacher Duncan Murray says he heard Canes’ coach Mark Hammett talking on the radio recently about wanting to reconnect with the community so he rang the Wellington Rugby Union the next day.

“Within 45 minutes someone from the Canes rang me back and these four guys were booked in. It’s awesome.”

Last Wedensday, midfield back Charlie Ngatai and loose forwards Karl Lowe, Serge Lilo and Faifili Levave, the latter two from Porirua club Northern United, turned out to put a group of students through their paces.

There were drills on how to protect the ball once a player has been tackled, drawing and passing, and plenty of time for games.

“They were all really good with the kids,” Murray says.

“Faifili and Serge are local boys, they went to school around here, so it’s great that the kids can see there are stepping stones to professional sports through local clubs and schools.”
