Surgery For Smith
Hurricanes centre Conrad Smith will undergo surgery at New Plymouth hospital today (Sunday) following the injury he sustained while setting up a try for Lome Fa’atau in the 5th minute of the Hurricanes match against the Western Force in New Plymouth on Saturday night.
Smith fractured both the tibia and fibula in his right leg and is expected to be out of rugby for four-to-six months. Today’s surgical procedure will result in a titanium rod inserted in the bone of Smith’s leg.
Hurricanes coach Colin Cooper said the injury is a cruel blow for both Conrad Smith and the Hurricanes.
“Conrad is a huge loss to our side and the entire squad really feels for him,” said Cooper.
“Our thoughts are with him at present and in terms of the Hurricanes, we lose his qualities as an excellent decision maker and a key organiser of our backline.
“You can’t easily replace a player of his class, but we know he will bounce back strong once his rehab work is done.”
